Browns Mill Urban Food Forest - Community Vision Master Plan

Stand Landscape Architecture, in collaboration with Sustenance Design and Mushroom Mountain, was recently awarded a City of Atlanta Office of Sustainability contract to facilitate and prepare a community vision plan for a neighborhood food forest on Browns Mill Road in Atlanta. This will be the first municipally-owned and operated food forest in the City of Atlanta.

Stand Landscape Architecture worked pro bono with the Wylde Center to develop a master plan for this community garden in the Candler Park neighborhood of Atlanta. The one-acre site was saved from development when purchased by adjoining neighbors Jesse and Dick Bathrick, Betsy Abrams and Matt Crowther in 1993 who then created a community garden in 1999. In 2016, the Bathricks passed the management reins on to the Wylde Center. The existing site has allotment gardens, chickens, goats and a play area and is frequently used for neighborhood events and children's parties. The master plan will seek to create a more integrated stormwater management approach through permaculture techniques and rain gardens as well as proposing naturalized play spaces for the young children that play in this secluded urban community farm.

Clara Kwon worked with multiple stakeholder groups to develop a master plan for a community farm in a low-income majority-immigrant neighborhood in the suburban edge of Toronto. Working with Everdale, a local farm-based non-profit, Clara prepared and facilitated the stakeholder and public meetings and navigated permit requirements. The goals of the farm included an education center for hands-on organic farming skills, a farm-based business incubator and community building. Her role also included analyzing partnership opportunities and functional connections, particularly with future transit plans, and existing adjacencies with York University, a pioneer history center and the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games sites.
